Is it true, "hell is other people?"

When Descartes said, “hell is other people,” he expressed his belief that interpersonal relationships can be incredibly challenging and even painful at times. In the play “No Exit,” in which this quote is featured, the characters are trapped in a room together for eternity, and their interactions become increasingly difficult and unbearable. Each character’s presence becomes a source of torment for the others, leading to the conclusion that “hell is other people.”

Contention breeds contention because of the contagious nature of emotions. That’s why it is so essential to regulate our own emotions when dealing with others. It is easy to unintentionally spread our feelings to those around us if we feel negative or upset. However, by managing our emotions and focusing on positivity and empathy, we can create a more positive vibe for ourselves and those around us.

Good people feel good! Being around people who are positive, supportive, and uplifting can have a beneficial effect on our own emotional state. We feel happier, more motivated, and more energized around people who inspire us and make us feel good about ourselves.

While other people can certainly negatively impact us, I’m making the case that taking responsibility for our own emotional well-being and working to regulate our emotions first is crucial. By doing so, we can cultivate more positive and fulfilling relationships. Since all this is true, start with yourself. Give yourself every reason to be wise and kind today! You’ll appreciate it, and so will everyone around you.

Wishing you health, happiness, and prosperity,

Mark
